Since the establishment of the Korea Veterans Health Service in 1981, VHS hospitals began as welfare hospitals with 250 beds. With the government’s expansion of medical support for veterans and the growing healthcare needs arising from an aging population and complex chronic conditions, these medical facilities have been progressively upgraded and expanded.
The VHS Medical Center first opened in 1983 as VHS Seoul Hospital in Dunchon-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, with a capacity of 440 beds. Today, it has evolved into the VHS Medical Center, boasting 1,400 beds and state-of-the-art facilities, delivering high-quality medical care to veterans.
Regional VHS hospitals were established sequentially: VHS Busan Hospital in 1984, VHS Gwangju Hospital in 1987, VHS Daegu Hospital in 1993, VHS Daejeon Hospital in 1997, and VHS Incheon Hospital in 2018. Through these developments, a nationwide regional network of veterans’ healthcare has been established, with each hospital serving as a community-centered facility responsible for the medical care and health of persons of distinguished service to the state, their families, and residents.
